The Surgical Technologist/Certified Surgical Technologist assists in patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse and according to the policies and procedures of the department. The trained technologist is assigned scrub duties, instrument processing/sterilization duties and specific patient care duties in relation to the complexity of the patient’s condition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Proficiently scrubs cases in assigned OR suite; assists surgical team during operative procedures.
  • Adheres to aseptic practices; monitors and maintains sterile field.
  • Gathers sterile supplies for scheduled procedures; ensures that adequate instruments are available for each case.
  • Counts sponges and needles on every case with the Registered Nurse (RN) circulator.
  • Assists circulating RN in positioning patient, prepping patient, opening sterile supplies, and setting up equipment when not scrubbing a case or as needed.
  • Assists OR staff in moving the anesthetized patient from OR bed to gurney.
  • Assists OR staff with room turnover post procedure including reprocessing instruments, mopping floor, wiping/disinfecting equipment, etc.
  • Assists instrument technician with disinfecting, cleaning, wrapping/packaging, sterilizing, and storing all used instruments at the end of each day; exercises care in cleaning and maintaining all surgical instruments.
  • Follows policies for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials.
  • Creates and updates preference cards for each physician for each type of procedure he/she performs.
  • Brings broken/malfunctioning equipment and instruments to OR manager for repair or replacement.
  • Assists in restocking OR suites at the end of each day; assists with re-sterilizing outdated supplies; assists with thorough cleaning of OR storage cabinets and supply room.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Completion of a recognized surgical technologist training program, required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with processing/sterilizing surgical instruments.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid DORA registration with the State of Colorado. Must have proof of registration and be in good standing.
  • Surgical Technologist certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology, preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Travel Requirements

Position requires acceptable motor vehicle driving history, valid and free from restrictions, and must have a valid driver’s license and appropriate vehicle insurance coverage. Ability to travel between all OCR locations.

The employee will occasionally assist patients in turning (170 lb average); will occasionally assist patient in arising from exam table; will occasionally push wheelchair patients; and occasionally assists patients in arising from and returning to wheelchair or bed.
