The Physical Therapy Assistant provides physical therapy services under the supervision of a physical therapist. They assist with the administration of patient care programs and help guide the patient through treatment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to physical therapist’s effectiveness by identifying patient care issues; providing information and commentary, implementing physical therapy directives
  • Performs therapeutic procedures by administering manual exercises; instructing, encouraging, and assisting patients in performing physical activities, such as non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, and daily-living activities; and in using supportive devices, such as crutches, canes, and prostheses.
  • Improve patient motor function and promote the capability of patients to function independently
  • Assist physical therapists in developing treatment plans
  • Direct patients in carrying out specific exercises and treat patients with a variety of therapeutic techniques
  • Document patient care services by charting in patient and department records
  • Instructs and counsels patients by describing therapeutic regimens; giving normal growth and development information; promoting wellness and health maintenance
Requirements
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Colorado Physical Therapy Assistant certification, required.
  • Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, required.
  • Core competencies in customer service, teamwork, communication, organization, and confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

  • The work environment is the typical medical office environment. The employee must be able to complete their work satisfactorily in an environment where there are significant distractions, including staff, patients, and vendors walking through and conversing, telephones ringing, conversations carrying over, loud noises, and interruptions to answer questions from others.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and should do so in a sound and safe manner. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will regularly assist patients in turning and arising from exam table; will regularly push wheelchair patients; and regularly assists patients in arising from and returning to wheelchair or bed.
