The OCR South Lead Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is point person for the Trauma team and provides patient care by examining patients for treatment, interpreting special tests, and directing treatment plans. This position is also responsible for emergency room and consult triage and assisting in surgery.

Duties Include: 

  • Directly supervises one or more employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Works closely with HR Director on personnel issues. Reports critical personnel issues to include coaching and ensuring a positive culture and work environment. critical personnel issues (e.g., disciplinary actions and/or termination) to supervisor.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert for his/her team. He/she provides process training for new and existing team members, oversees and ensures coverage, and communicates and makes recommendations to their Manager/Director on workflow, equipment issues, patient requests or concerns, etc.
  • Develops trauma team schedules including weekend call to maintain effective staff coverage.
  • Assists in recruitment, interviewing and selecting of new Trauma Physician Assistant (PA) staff and Nurse Practitioner (NP) staff.
  • Ensures that PA’s are adequately trained and compliant with ongoing continuing education requirements; assists in APP performance evaluations.
  • Works with physicians to develop trauma program policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that APP staff adhere to hospital and OCR standards and guidelines.
  • Researches patient care complaints related to trauma and elective services. Makes recommendations and coordinates resolution.
  • Maintains quality assurance data related to trauma and elective services.
  • Participates in promoting the OCR trauma and elective programs.
  • Serves as a liaison with the OCR leadership team to ensure efficiency and data accuracy.
  • Provides orthopedic health care and performs selective medical and surgical services under the direction of OCR Physicians.
  • Records patient history, performs physical examinations, and records data.
  • Orders and interprets x-rays, special tests, laboratory and diagnostic studies.
  • Determines diagnoses, directs patient care plans, including prescribing medication.
  • Functions as a surgical first assistant.
  • Performs closed reductions and placement of traction pins.
  • Generates income for OCR by billing for surgical assist and hospital consults.
  • Takes trauma calls at the area hospitals.
  • Maintains updated trauma census.
  • Performs rounds with attending physician and patient liaison.
  • Educates patients on orthopaedic services, follow-up and clinic information; follows up if necessary.
  • Available for consults by Emergency Room Physicians and staff, or clinic providing independent assessment, treatment and minor procedures.
  • Provides continuous communication with on-call OCR Physician regarding emergencies and consults.
  • Ensures appropriate x-rays available to attending/trauma physicians for review on a daily basis.
  • Obtains all appropriate information on trauma patients and include on the trauma line.
  • Obtains appropriate insurance data.
  • Provides instructions/education to patients on prescribed medication and treatment plans.
  • Documents all patient encounters and paged patient phone calls.
  • Dictates on all patients under treating physician’s name.
  • Communicates pertinent information to other departments when needed (i.e. scheduling, billing etc.).
  • Answers all pager calls as assigned.
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees as requested
  • Participates in professional development activities and continuing medical education (CME) events.
  • Demonstrates courtesy and helpfulness toward patients, family members and others.
  • Ensures smooth and efficient telephone communication.
  • Is cooperative and helpful with co-workers and employees in other departments.
  • Serves as a professional representative of OCR.
  • Ensures that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Minimum one year experience as an Advanced Practice Provider at OCR
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, ability to quickly learn enterprise and imaging systems, and similar computer applications.
  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and licensed or eligible to be licensed in the state of Colorado. Or certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Colorado.
  • Valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, preferred.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, preferred

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will regularly assist patients in turning and arising from exam table; will regularly push wheelchair patients; and regularly assists patients in arising from and returning to wheelchair or bed.

Pay: $90,000 – $170,000 year, commensurate with experience
