The Operating Room Registered Nurse provides expert professional nursing care which includes assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care rendered to patients with urgent, emergent or potential health problems in the intra-operative setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Completes preoperative assessment of patient; reviews and records patient health history; notes any abnormal conditions.
  • Develops a plan of care for each patient and coordinates planned nursing care with other health care team members.
  • Positions the patient ensuring patient safety, functional alignment, and physical comfort.
  • Maintains and monitors sterile, controlled environment; ensures adherence to aseptic techniques.
  • Provides or administers medications ordered by physician; documents administration on patients OR record.
  • Completes all paperwork (i.e. OR record, charge sheet) accurately and legibly.
  • When circulating, assists anesthesia, scrub, and other personnel to ensure patient safety and a smooth operation.
  • Assists in gathering supplies and equipment needed for each case; assists in opening sterile supplies and preparing the sterile environment for each case.
  • When functioning as the scrub nurse, scrub cases in assigned OR suite and assists surgical team during operative procedures.
  • Assures that sponge and needle counts are correct.
  • Assists other OR staff in moving anesthetized patient from OR bed to gurney.
  • After surgical procedure, assists other OR staff with room turnover (reprocessing instruments, wiping/disinfecting equipment, mopping floor, etc).
  • Assists anesthetist in transporting patient to the recovery room; provides recovery room RN with report of patient’s condition, surgical procedure performed, and other appropriate information.
  • Assists with the disinfecting, cleaning, wrapping, sterilizing, and storage of all used instruments at the end of each day; exercises care in cleaning and maintaining all surgical instruments.
  • Assists in restocking OR suites at the end of each day; assists with thorough cleaning of OR storage cabinets and supply room.
  • Assists with creating and updating preference cards for each physician for each type of procedure he/she performs.
  • Follows policies for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials.
  • Attends and participates in both on and off campus seminars and educational conferences.
  • Participates in utilization and cost containment activities.
  • Assists in developing and revising policies and procedures for the Surgery Center.
  • Serves on Surgery Center and clinic-wide committees, as applicable.
  • Functions as a member of the Surgery Center/OCR team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Associates Degree from an accredited Registered Nursing (RN) program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operating room procedures and protocols.
  • Valid Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) license. Must provide proof of license and be in good standing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, preferred.
  • Core competencies in job knowledge, interpersonal skills, communication, teamwork, reasoning and problem solving, and confidentiality.
  • Acceptable motor vehicle driving history, valid and free from restrictions, and must have a valid driver’s license and appropriate vehicle insurance coverage. Ability to travel between all OCR locations.

  • The work environment is a typical medical office environment. The employee must be able to complete their work satisfactorily in an environment where there are significant distractions, including staff, patients, and vendors walking through and conversing, telephones ringing, conversations carrying over, loud noises, and interruptions to answer questions from others.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls up to 12 hours per day. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear up to 12 hours per day. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl up to 12 hours a day.
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and should do so in a sound and safe manner. The employee will regularly assist patients in turning (170 lb average); will regularly assist patient in arising from exam table; will regularly push wheelchair patients; and regularly assists patients in arising from and returning to wheelchair or bed.
