Dr. Robert Matar is an orthopaedic surgeon with specialized fellowship training at the prestigious Stanford University Medical Center in hip and knee replacements and complex revisions. There he trained and worked with Drs. William J. Maloney, James I. Huddleston, Stuart B. Goodman, and Derek F. Amanatullah- surgeons whose work has shaped modern joint replacement, from foundational basic science to robotic technology and bearing surface design now used worldwide.

At Stanford, Dr. Matar served as a Clinical Instructor, took Level 1 trauma call, and managed the complex referrals that come to a quaternary center such as failed prior joint replacements, periprosthetic fractures, infection, severe deformity, and significant bone loss, cases other hospitals send on when they exceed what can be done locally. That experience shapes how he approaches every case: the routine hip or knee replacement goes smoothly more often when the surgeon has spent years managing what happens when things don’t.

He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the distinguished University of Cincinnati Medical Center, home to one of the busiest trauma centers in the country, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His training included a dedicated research year spanning orthopaedic trauma, adult reconstruction, hand, shoulder, and sports medicine. During that time he secured multiple research grants, delivered more than 70 presentations at national and international conferences, several of which received national awards, and published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading orthopaedic journals.

Research remains a constant thread in his work, and that grounding in evidence-based practice means his patients benefit from current, well-supported approaches to joint replacement.

Born and raised in a small town in Michigan, Dr. Matar has lived and worked extensively abroad and speaks four languages: English, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese. His travels have included volunteer surgical trips from Central America to the Middle East, as well as traveling fellowships in Santiago, Chile, and São Paulo, Brazil. He continues to collaborate with international colleagues, and those perspectives inform how he approaches clinical problems and connects with patients from a wide range of backgrounds.

Dr. Matar cares for patients throughout OCR’s service area across northern Colorado, Wyoming, and western Nebraska, performing hip and knee replacement at hospitals and surgery centers in Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley. He offers both anterior and posterior approaches to hip replacement using AI-assisted navigation, as well as robotic-assisted knee replacement. His focus is on reducing pain and restoring function so patients can return to the activities that matter to them, with safety as the priority at every step.
